Mystery Coupe: 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Berlinetta
Here in the UK there is a saying that you’re not a true petrolhead until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo. Well unfortunately we must admit we have never owned one, but the one here on offer on Pistonheads out of Belgium might just temp us. It is slightly expensive at £12,750 as it needs restoring and the identity of the coachbuilder who added the steel roof is unknown. But, once restored, this could be a nice little headturner.
The quest to find out who made the conversion is still going. Originally it was thought that Belgian coachbuilder Jacques Coune might have been involved, but when asked directly he confirmed he didn’t do it. Jacques Coune was the first Abarth agent outside of Italy and made loads of personalised cars for wealthy individuals and is most known for the Volvo Amazon Convertible and MGB Coune Coupe. Hardtops like these were not uncommon, the most famous of these type of conversions the Harrington hardtop versions of the Sunbeam Le Mans.
The seller bought the car off auction in France, where it was registered as a Coupe in 1979 and it is claimed there are only three existing. It is solid but requires restauration. We can even see a bit of the new 8C Competizione in it.
