Plastic Fantastic: 1964 Autobianchi Stellina (x2)
Only 502 examples were made of this little two-seater barchetta. And then two show up for sale around the same time. One red one for sale in Italy and one a bit more expensive, two-tone one in Lille, France. These were fiberglass bodies put on a Fiat 600 chassis. Autobianchi were one of the first companies to use full fiberglass bodies. People didn’t like it very much though.
The car was very expensive when it came out and they were only produced for two years. It was a Tom Tjaarda design and when Autobianchi a couple of years later disappeared into the Lancia brand of the Fiat conglomerate, it was followed up by the Fiat 850 Spider.
Both cars look quite different really and both seem to need a bit of attention. We like the chrome windscreen frame more on the red-white car. We would also ditch the luggage rack on the back. As can be seen here, the cars look quite nice with the moondisc-like wheels.
The chrome on the red one seems a bit flat for some reason. So that could be a quite expensive little exercise. The red and white one needs new shoes, and we don’t really like the bullet mirrors. The engine was also based on the Fiat 600 so, although the condition of both engines is a big unknown, spare parts should be plentiful. They are advertised for 7000 and 10000 euros respectively.
