The year 1955 was one of the deadliest in motorsport history. In France, at the 24 heures Le Mans race, 92 got killed and 140 injured when Pierre Levegh crashed his silver Mercedes SLR and pieces of this car got projected onto the crowds. (some highlights of the race here). But it was also the year when MG brought a prototype of their new MGA to France to show off their new car.

The car being sold is a replica of that 1955 Le Mans car and is built on a 1958 MGA roadster basis. It has been built by Classic Restorations in Milton Keynes about ten years ago. It has been equipped with a brand new 3.9-litre Rover V8 engine and modified with fast road cam, 4-barrel Webber, and special exhaust system. It develops 265bhp and must go like stonk! Under 5 seconds to get to 60mph!

The interior is blue leather and has been custom made. The dashboard features nice silver dials and has been complemented with a great steering wheel and machined metal dashboard. The combination looks stunning. The canopy and windscreen are exact replicas and if need be the canopy can be removed to take a passenger.

The suspension is coilover, it has disc brakes all round, LSD under the rear, and a set of awesome looking Borrani replica wire wheels that suit the car to a tee. The filler cap on the bootlid is a great feature. All in all a stunning car, well worth the now-lowered Buy-It-Now of GBP35000. It can be found here on ebay UK.

Update 3/3: This fabulous MGB didn’t meet reserve at GBP4950 and has been relisted. Links updated.

From 24/2:

Here it is. The perfect base for an engine swap. And what a bargain that would be if the price is right for the car of course. The MGB GT is a not too contrary-looking car, but we all know they were a bit underpowered. The owner has created the perfect Sebring replica, but has “only” fitted a reconditioned, what we suspect pretty standard, 1800 pushrod engine in the car. Fitting a Rover V8 instead shouldn’t mean compromising on reliability …

It has the full Sebring glassfibre body kit fitted, complemented with a nice set of Compomotive Minilite-style wheels. Although probably not everybody’s favourite, we dig these cars with a Webasto sunroof. The racing mirrors look very cool on the car.

The interior has been kept standard, although has been completely refitted in light grey piped leather. The Motolita steering wheel is a perfect match. By the owner’s admission, the car is by no means perfect, inside or outside, but we like it. A lot.

The MG is for sale on ebay UK out of Somerset. Currently the reserve hasn’t been met yet.

Update 25/2: This Jag sold for GBP15000.

From 20/2:

We like the colour orange on older cars. It gives older cars a more modern look without being too contemporary, if you know what we mean. Maybe not … well anyway … This Jaguar race car looks absolutely stunning in orange. It has been completely rebuilt and is even road legal.

The car has been used as a historic touring car and has just seen a complete rebuild. Loads of things have been modernised. Marcus Barclay, the Jaguar specialist from Bucks, worked his magic on the engine to JEC racing spec. It has been fitted with extravagant orange cam covers. It has also been fitted with a rebuilt gearbox and differential, all of which has only been used on the road. The Jag features uprated competition brakes and independent suspension. As you can see in the pictures below, it has a new alloy fuel cell.

We really dig this car. We like the fact all chrome has been replaced with black rubbers without compromising the elegance of the car. Not sure though about purchasing it for ourselves without making it a bit less rudimentary. It would be a bit more like for example a Coombs Mk II. Or at least with a few more seats.

For sale on ebay UK out of New Malden near Kingston upon Thames, with 4 days to go. Currently at just over GBP6000 with reserve not met.

Update 29/11: The MG has been relisted. Links updated.

In every roadtest the MGB Roadster features, the car comes out as rather boring and underpowered. These cars scream for upgrading, in our opinion. For us, the V8 engine swaps and rally (replica) versions are the ones to go for and we were well chuffed when we first set our eyes on the little thumbnail of this particular car on German ebay.

This car is an ex-UK car that was shipped to America some years ago and made its way back east to Germany. The seller mentions MG Motorsport and it makes us wonder if the MG dealer/tuner had any involvement in the building. There is a picture in the auction where it shows the original British registration R7DBL and of course the cars with rego 6DBL, 7DBL and 8DBL were well-known racing cars. Nice touch. We wonder if the registration would still be available if the car got re-registered in the UK.

The car oozes with patina and we’re glad that the works tributes are not just showing in the cosmetics department. It has been fitted with a limited slip differential and panhard rods at the back. The brakes have been overhauled. The 1800cc engine is a later B type with five bearings and has a four-gear transmission, with no overdrive unfortunately. It all remains a bit vague what engine mods exactly have been done though. The car sits on Competition knock-off wire wheels.

The Roadster also comes with a brand new white hardtop with air vent on top. It is for sale out of Munich in Germany and as mentioned before is being auctioned on ebay Germany.

Service at ClassicCarHunter has been interrupted a bit by the arrival of a wee boy. We hope to resume regularity of posts as soon as possible. From now on, we should really be looking for cars with at least some space for a toddler in the back, but we couldn’t help liking this Jensen-Healey for sale on ebay UK through a trader.

Making an originally rather bland classic look a bit more attractive and contemporary is never an easy task, but in this case the result is not too bad really. The Compomotive wheels might not be to everybody’s taste, but we quite like the low-profile tyre look on this Jensen-Healey. We’re not convinced about the colour, but the overall combination is appealing enough to consider putting in an offer.

The real attraction about this car though can be found under the bonnet. It has the original 2-litre Lotus twincam replaced with a bit more grunt. Instead the car has a 3.9-litre V8 lump from a TVR 390SE. This is in essence a Rover V8, developed for TVR by racing tuner Andy Rouse to develop 275bhp at 5500rpm. The fuel injection has been converted to a Holley carb on an Offenhauser intake manifold. The engine has been linked up to a custom prop shaft driving the original Jensen rear axle. The exhaust comes in true TVR fashion and must sound incredible.

The interior is a nice black leather and the car comes with a hardtop. It is for sale out of London here on ebay and comes with a Buy-It-Now of GBP5950. Not too bad. We’d like to test drive it though …

For sale in the south of Holland is this nice little project. This fixed head coupé has been partly restored. All welding is done, including a new rear end and sills. It has been put in a primer and needs painting. The car comes with a Production Record Trace Certificate and chassis, body, engine, gearbox are all matching numbers.

The Jaguar XK150 was the successor of the XK140 and although there were quite a few visual differences between the cars, it still featured the straight six engine from the XK140. The standard engine delivered a “meagre” 180bhp and the car proved a bit slow (for some). This one has the SE engine which had a modified head with larger valves and delivered 210bhp.

If you’re not into matching numbers cars, you could get a bored out 3.8-litre engine that delivers 265bhp and fit that instead. It’s all about having some fun in life!

These cars are for sale on various European websites for around GBP35000. This one is for sale for EUR13500, which is roughly GBP10k. The great thing is that you can restore this car to whatever spec you fancy. Keep us posted on the progress please.

Mulliner and Park Ward were two coachbuilders who had done some work for Rolls-Royce and finally got taken over by the motoring company from Crewe when they had hit financial troubles. The first car that came out under Rolls-Royce ownership was this Silver Shadow-based coupé, or better even: “two door saloon”. It was named after Mulliner Park Ward but was changed from 1971 onwards into Corniche.

It was the most expensive car in the world at the time. It was twice the price of a Ferrari Dino or even an “ordinary” Rolls-Royce. About 600 Coupés and 500 Convertibles were made.

We like this one. There is something about the colour combination, with the white-walled tyres and the webasto sunroof that is quite appealing. The Caribbean Blue bodywork with the Oatmeal leather and the wooden interior finishes create a very South of France Saint-Tropez kind of atmosphere. The steering wheel is very simple in its design and also features the automatic gearbox’ gear display and column gear shifter.

The engine is a V8, with twin SU carburettors and has 87500 miles on the clock. It has just been serviced and had a complete brake overhaul in the process. The car sits an inch lower than its four door saloon version. The car is for sale on ebay UK for GBP15000 or best offer.

After World War II, there was a shortage of cars in Britain and especially of cars for export. Ingenious manufacturers would pick a chassis of a very popular car, design a fibreglass body and stick it on the chassis. A new car was born, a “special”!

When the Austin-Healey Sprite came out, a cheap little sports car, it became very popular and loads of these ingenious manufacturers went bust. Except the even more ingenious ones who started making body panels for the Sprite as the “Frogeye” front was not to everybody’s liking. The more famous of these coachbuilders, or better the ones who survived the longest were Williams & Pritchard, Ashley Laminates, WSM, and Peel Coachworks. Which brings us to this rather cool looking Ashley GT, for sale on ebay in Belgium.

Ashley made 4 different bodies and the 1172 bodyshell was one of them, based on the Ford Anglia and Popular chassis. There was an open version and a coupe version, called GT. They came with an option of engines, based on the 1172cc sidevalve engine from the Ford Prefect mainly but also the BMC A-series and the MGA engine. This one is fitted with a Ford 6-cylinder, which makes for an even more interesting proposition. It is mated to a Ford 4-speed box and MGB short ratio axle.

We’re not a big fan of the yellow knock-off wire wheels, but combined with the yellow dash and the lined carpets they do make a striking combination. We might source a period 3-spoke steering wheel to replace the current one.

The car was for sale on classiccarsforsale.com for EUR22900, but as we stated earlier has now come up for sale on ebay Belgium for EUR14999. A significant reduction in price, possibly inspired by the red Ashley GT also for sale on the classiccarsforsale.com website for GBP12700. We prefer the yellow one as it has a more sporty appearance and the more interesting front.

PS: You might have noticed that on the ebay ad, the seller claims the engine is a 6-cylinder while on the classiccarsforsale.com ad it is claimed it is a V6 engine. We have assumed it is meant to be a 6-cylinder.

Sometimes we at Classic Car Hunter wished we were a bit more mechanically gifted. Like the bloke who dreamt up this combo and then actually realised it. Meet the Spitfire with the Dolomite Sprint engine and the TR7 gearbox, for sale here on RetroRides.

It is without doubt the meanest Spitty we have seen for a long time. The grille with the Dymag wheels and the fiberglass bonet, combined with the black colour make it one of our favourite custom Spitfires out there.

The custom dash looks alright, the seats look in very good condition. We would source or fabricate some doorcards to finish off the interior. The Dolomite engine is a 16-valve 4-cylinder lump producing 127bhp in standard form. We don’t know how much this one has been tweaked. It should be a pretty quick car considering the +/-800kg weight!

The seller is looking for £2000 and is based in the Midlands UK area. As is so often the case, the seller could benefit from putting more pictures up. No doubt a lot of hours have gone into creating this wicked Triumph. We doubt he will get his asking price though.

Update 23/9: This auction seems to have ended on a bit of a downer. With one day to go the seller announced the head gasket is going, then the highest bidder pulls his bid. The car made just over £5000. Somehow we feel the seller shot in his own foot a bit with this one.

In 1978, Vauxhall decided to take its popular Chevette model into rallying. This meant they had to make 400 homologation cars. Ford had its Escort, Fiat had its 131 Abarth, Talbot had the Sunbeam Lotus, and Vauxhall created the Vauxhall Chevette HS.

To create its new racer, Vauxhall dug into the General Motors parts bin and came up with the 2.3-litre engine from the HC range, the suspension, brakes and rear axle from the Kadette C GT/E, and the wheels from the Chevrolet Vega. It was over twice the price of a normal Chevette and Vauxhall struggled to shift the cars. Some were painted black to become the super rare HS-X. The last 40 were used to make the HSR model.

This particular car, for sale out of Lancashire, is a very tidy example. Not surprisingly as it has been in storage for 15 years. On its recommissioning, the engine was completely rebuilt, the bottom end lightened and the car was fitted with high pressure oil pump, stainless steel exhaust, oil cooler, and electric fuel pump.

The interior has been cleaned up and features the original red tartan cloth. The car comes with a sunroof, but as there are other HSs with different sunroofs, we think this could have been an aftermarket addition. The car comes with a few scratches and blemishes, it also features a different front bumper/spoiler than standard. On the rear offside panel seems to be a little hole …

The car is listed here on ebay UK out of Lancashire and has already made its reserve. It has probably over 300 people watching the auction, including Classic Car Hunter of course, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the car makes close to double the £5000 it is on at the moment.
